Born as the princess of Hyrule, Zelda was referred to as queen of her kingdom at the young age of ten, when she crossed paths with the potential Hero of Time initially.

It was by her request that he set out upon his journey to obtain the three Spiritual Stones. This was Zelda’s perhaps foolish attempt to put a stop to any future plans that the Gerudo’s fearless leader, Ganondorf, might have had. It was her belief that dark clouds within her dreams of prophecy were meant to signify him and the wrath he would bring to her otherwise peaceful kingdom.

Although Link was successful, by the time he’d arrived in Hyrule Castle, Zelda had done all within her ability to protect her family heirloom known as the Ocarina of Time, a musical instrument that could be used in junction with the spiritual stones to seal Ganondorf away. Upon Link’s arrival, Zelda’s caretaker, Impa, could not ensure the princess’s safety beneath the masonry of Hyrule Castle. In the midst of her escape, Zelda gave to Link her ocarina, in hopes that he would succeed where she could not.

Not all plans go the way they are intended. Though Link had performed the first few steps to providing care to Hyrule’s lands, Ganondorf took advantage of the situation and brought into his power what he believed was the Triforce, an ancient relic left behind by the three goddesses responsible for Hyrule’s creation. With this placed within his grasp, he turned the world into one of darkness and evil in just seven years.

Under the guise of an alter ego known as ‘Sheik’, Zelda crossed paths with the Hero of Time, who was well aware of what his position in life had become. Blessed with a harp, Sheik was responsible for pointing Link in the proper direction to complete his ultimate quest in awakening the seven sages, who would be able to trap Ganondorf in a region known as the Sacred Realm, a world that appeared to be between a plane of the living, and a plane of the dead.

The other half to Sheik’s obligation was to infiltrate Ganondorf’s forces, while keeping his eyes off of the alter ego, ensuring that the Hero of Time could accomplish his task. Link’s journey was not in vain. A hostage of the Gerudo Fortress, he crossed paths with Sheik who came to set him free. In the Temple of Spirit, under the watchful eye of Nabooru, the replacing leader of the Gerudo, Sheik revealed his actual identity. Ousted as a traitor to Ganondorf’s cause by Koume and Kotake, witches meant to do Ganondorf’s bidding, Sheik reverted into Zelda’s form and was taken captive, held in the castle that was formerly hers and twisted into a mess of corrupted architecture.

Link, with Nabooru’s vague aid, and that of the other sages, slayed Ganondorf. His journey ended with Zelda awakening as the final sage of Hyrule, and playing the Ocarina of Time to send him back to his own time.

It is from this, amidst Hyrule’s reconstructive efforts, that Zelda is being played.

Zelda and Sheik are very much two versions of the same person. Zelda explains this briefly when she openly reveals herself to Link beyond the Desert Colossus.

Wishing to be able to do both, protect herself, and offer her aid to Link, Zelda made a request to Impa that she do something—anything, so she might be able to perform a task greater than a young girl in hiding. Uncertain, though certainly not one to stamp out the requests of the princess, Impa decides to bestow a particular gift upon Zelda: the ability to take on the form of Sheik.

Zelda explains her position and the back story she fed to Ganondorf in an attempt to stand behind his lines.

Sheik was to be a member of the Sheikah tribe, exiled for implied thoughts that were not so righteous. The Sheikah were initially a race of people thought to have been stripped from the living world, responsible for the protection of Hyrule’s royal family. They appear to have exceptional abilities beyond that of Gerudo, Hylian, Zora, Goron, and other racial skills across the land, a prime example being the one that allows Impa to give Zelda her newfound power. It was to Ganondorf’s knowledge that Sheik had disappointed the elders of the Sheikah and was cast out as a pariah. This allowed for the opportunity that Zelda had wanted all along.

 • Although Zelda is a female, her counterpart, her alter ego, is male. It is safe to assume that Sheik is played as being fully male. In the same respect, it is safe to assume that Zelda is played as being fully female.

 • While Zelda is capable of using her various magical spells, Sheik is shown using a katana, though it is not explained why. It is safe to assume that Sheik constantly carries his harp and his katana, yet it is uncertain what happens to these items when Sheik changes between his own form and Zelda’s.

 • The mark of the Triforce of Wisdom, which signifies a third of the Triforce’s true power is present on the back of the right hand of both Zelda and Sheik. Though it seems plainly seen, be it on bare flesh, or through the white gloves the princess wears, it glistens only when its power is used. That said, this power appears defensive in nature and is implied to only be used when absolutely necessary.

 • Though none of the games appear to portray this, the original art of Zelda and Sheik shows a difference in skin tones. While Zelda may seem pale or a peach approaching the pallid tones, Sheik is considerably darker, even though Impa is shown as being remarkably fair-skinned. It is this player’s preference to play Zelda and Sheik with the distinguished difference.

 • Zelda’s ears are pierced and strangely enough are never seen without donning a pair of Triforce-shaped earrings. Sheik’s ears are never seen, but it is implied at least the left ear is pierced as that is a Sheikah’s rite of passage as explained by Impa when she pierces Link’s ear.
